Mission

The mission of the Microwave Instruments and Technology Branch (MITB) is to advance Earth and Space Science and Exploration microwave instruments by researching and developing state-of-the-art technologies, applying technologies, and providing technological expertise for mission concepts, technology infusion, and instrument development. It addresses the scientific needs for advanced and new measurements in the microwave through submillimeter-wave frequency range for future remote sensing and radio astronomy missions.

The Branch performs technology and instrument developments including design, fabrication, integration and test, performance analysis, and calibration. In addition, the MITB supports scientific field campaigns, worldwide, by providing expertise in the verification of operations, instrument calibration, and validation of data products. It works very closely with scientists to develop mission concepts, derive specifications from science requirements, and to determine areas where technology advancement is needed to meet the science requirements.

Specific technology development efforts include synthetic thinned array radiometers, low power receivers, digital correlators, low noise receivers, and radar beamforming and differential techniques. These technologies are applicable to advanced active and passive instruments such as microwave interferometers, polarimeters, digital radiometers, Doppler radars, and Synthetic Aperature RADARs (SAR's) with an emphasis on improved performance, increased reliability, and reduced power, size, and weight for spaceborne measurements.
