Wavefront Sensing and Control (WFSC)

In-process wavefront sensing analysis to determine aberrations associated with a segmented aperture system, such as the James Webb Space Telescope.

Leveraging Fourier Optics and Machine Learning for Wavefront Error Correction

Wavefront Sensing and Control (WFSC) capability leverages Fourier optics to model electro-optical systems. This includes the application of phase retrieval and phase diversity techniques, enhanced by state-of-the-art estimation and machine learning algorithms, to measure, diagnose, and correct wavefront errors like misalignment in subsystems and end-to-end systems. These techniques are also integral to cutting-edge research, such as the development of coronagraphs for exoplanet detection and characterization.

Wavefront Sensing and Control (WFSC) is managed by ETD’s Instrument Systems and Technology Division (ISTD). Contact ISTD for more information.

ABOUT ETD

The Engineering & Technology Directorate at Goddard designs missions, builds satellites and instruments, operates and controls spacecrafts, and acquires/distributes data to the world-wide science community. ETD data products are used to conduct research in Earth and Space Sciences that benefit both the nation and the world.
