MSD’s Role in Pushing the Boundaries of Space Servicing

The Mechanical Systems Division (MSD) plays a pivotal role in advancing NASA’s OSAM-1 (On-orbit Servicing, Assembly, and Manufacturing) mission, with recent milestones showcasing its significant contributions. The delivery of the servicing payload primary structure to Integration and Test (I&T) marks a crucial step forward, highlighting MSD’s expertise in delivering essential components for space missions.

In tandem with this milestone, the MSD is actively engaged in the ongoing development of mission-critical hardware. This includes the creation of cutting-edge robotic system products like the Robotic Electronics Unit, Advanced Tool Drive Assembly, and various on-orbit servicing tools, along with the integration of robotic force torque sensors and electronics. These innovations underscore MSD’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of space servicing technology, ensuring the success and efficiency of future missions.

The MSD’s dedication extends beyond hardware development to encompass a comprehensive range of engineering disciplines. From Materials & Processes to on-orbit dynamics, mechanical engineering, electromechanical engineering (mechatronics), robot system analysis, thermal systems, and contamination control, MSD’s multidisciplinary expertise ensures the reliability and performance of OSAM-1’s systems in the demanding environment of space.

As the OSAM-1 mission progresses, the MSD continues to provide crucial support throughout the fabrication, assembly, integration, and testing phases. With state-of-the-art facilities and a team of skilled professionals, MSD ensures that every aspect of the mission meets the highest standards of quality and reliability.
